The town of Tullow in northeast area of County Carlow is a ‘District Town’ strategically located less than 50km from Kilkenny to the southwest, 16km southeast of Carlow Town and 80km southwest of Dublin City.  As a market town, Tullow has a strong employment and service base serving surrounding areas, including industry and agricultural services.

Tullow is an example of a pre-Norman monastery which was developed into an Anglo-Norman town the former castle and the former Abbey are located at the southern portion of the town on the southern bank of the river Slaney. The heritage story of the town of Tullow can be read through the street pattern and buildings of the well-built eighteenth-century street town with its prominent marketplace. Tullow’s valuable built heritage character is illustrated by the historic buildings and Protected Structures present in the town.

Local knowledge and information provided by the community in Tullow has been important in understanding the place and developing the Town Centre First Plan. The collaborative process and engagement with local stakeholders and Tullow’s community has been central to the process. Themes presented in Tullow’s Plan include Environment, Economy, Movement and Urban Structure. Objectives and outcomes are presented in relation to each theme.
