LUC completes Tubbercurry Town Centre First plan; focus moves to Blessington and Killala
LUC has successfully finalised the Town Centre First plan for Tubbercurry, Sligo. Our teams are now embarking on similar transformative masterplans for Blessington and Killala.
These three projects are responses to the Irish Government’s ‘Town Centre First’ agenda which aims to revitalise rural towns nationwide and create vibrant and resilient communities.
Under LUC’s direction, a diverse team collaborated to establish the vision for development within Tubbercurry, presented through a variety of opportunities from public realm enhancement and shop front strategies to proposals for derelict and vacant properties and land.
The primary objectives were to fortify local identity, create attractive people-focused spaces, enhance climate resilience, and bolster economic vitality.
Community engagement was pivotal to the project. LUC facilitated a series of workshops that allowed Tubbercurry residents to express their insights and experiences regarding the town’s development.
Researchers from the University of Strathclyde assisted the team to ensure the community had a central role in the decision-making process, as part of an EU-funded initiative called ‘Demotec’. Through a series of in-person and online workshops, 42 innovative ideas surfaced.
With the active involvement of the community, LUC prioritised these ideas, ensuring that the most impactful proposals found a place in the Tubbercurry Town Centre First Plan.
