Roscrea

Population: 5,542 (2022 Census)

Roscrea is a market town in North Tipperary, located in Ireland’s Mid-West Region 71 km from Limerick to the west and 122 km from Dublin to the east. Roscrea is one of Irelands oldest towns and its historical significance is represented by a 7th century monastery, a 12th century cathedral church, a 13th Century Norman Castle and Damer House which was built in 1720, as Roscrea began to prosper as a market-town.

One of Roscrea’s strongest assets is its scenery. It is geographically located in a valley between the Slieve Bloom and the Devil’s Bit Mountains and functions as an inland gateway to the Shannon Region. Castle street features Roscrea Castle and access to Damer house and gardens. The Street has the wide proportions and the grandeur of a civic street. Rosemary Square hosts historic shopfronts facing onto an open space and is part of an Architectural Conservation Area as are Main Street and Market Square.

There are a number of serviced business parks in Roscrea and larger employers include meat processing, food production, nursing homes and retail. Roscrea rail station is currently served by two daily return departures on the Limerick to Ballybrophy line. Green amenities in the town include Damer House gardens and the Glebe Park, a public park with playground.

A primary goal for the Town Team in the development of the Town Centre First plan was to ensure as much public consultation as possible. This was achieved through comprehensive public and stakeholder engagement supported by the Town team and Tipperary County Council, helping to deliver a plan that will revitalise, regenerate, reenergise and breathe new life into our town centre.

Under this plan Roscrea will use its strengths – its people, buildings, infrastructure and natural environment – to create a vibrant, caring and prosperous market town.
