Tubbercurry

Population: 2,307 (2022 Census)

Tubbercurry is a market town within a predominantly rural, agricultural community, located approximately 35 km south of Sligo town, in the south- west of the County, along the national primary N-17 Sligo to Galway Road. The regional Boyle to Ballina Road also crosses the town, which is the convergence point for the local town’s focal point at Wolfe Tone Square. Ireland West Knock Airport is also located approx. 16km to the south of the town. Tubbercurry was once served by a train station as part of the route between Claremorris and Sligo which closed to passenger traffic in 1963. The disused Sligo to Limerick rail line also runs along the northwestern side of the town centre. Tubbercurry has a population of around 2,307 people according to the 2022 Census and the Town functions as a retail and service centre for the surrounding rural communities of South Sligo.

Plans & Publications

Tubbercurry is well- situated, in proximity to the Ox Mountains and Lough Talt. The town attracts many visitors during its calendar of annual festivals and events such as the Old Fair Day, the Western Drama Festival and the South Sligo Summer School, while the hills of Knocknashee (north) and Muckelty Hill (north- east) provide an attractive backdrop to the town.

There are numerous places of interest close to the town centre, including The Community Park and Forest Walk, Tubbercurry GAA Club and Golf Club, Public amenity destinations such as St Brigid’s Hall which provides theatre and sports events, Teach Laighne which includes a library and community services, and An Chroí Digital Hub, a facility providing business support and access to technology for the community.

The public consultation process for Tubbercurry’s Town Centre First Plan was a collaborative effort to gather the views and opinions of the people of Tubbercurry as to how they felt their town could be improved as a place in which to live, work, do business and spend time. The Town Team for Tubbercurry features representatives from a broad spectrum of community groups such as the Tubbercurry Chamber of Commerce, Tubbercurry Tidy Towns and South Sligo Summer School, local sports groups, businesses and Elected Member representation.

Themes identified by the community as part of this Town Centre First Plan include; Strengthening Tubbercurry as a welcoming destination town; Repurposing vacant and derelict buildings; Creating attractive and people- focused spaces; Supporting active lifestyles and access to enhanced green spaces and Developing a sustainable and resilient town. The Town Team, supported by the Town Regeneration Officer and Sligo County Council will have a continuous role in co- ordinating and overseeing delivery of Town Centre First projects, communicating with stakeholders and reviewing the Town Centre First plan over time so that they retain ownership of the process.
